The vessel voyage data recorder is also known as the black box of the vessel, or VDR for short. It is a complete system for recording and ship navigation and operation data, video data, AIS data, etc., including any interface with input data sources required for data processing and data encoding, the final record data information, power supply and dedicated backup power supply equipment in its black box. It is an instrument that records and saves the position, dynamics, physical conditions, commands and manipulation methods, video and other relevant information of the vessel in a period before and after the accident in a safe and recoverable manner. It plays a key role in accident investigation and analysis.

    Overview of system functions

    The vessel voyage data recorder is mainly composed of the shipboard equipment and system management platform, in which, shipboard equipment is mainly constituted by the data processor (host), camera, network hard disk video recorder, black box, fatigue driving monitor, etc.; data processor is connected to the broadband network. With remote cloud platform technology and B/S architecture, supervisors can realize remote access to video surveillance on the vessel through the system management platform at any time or place as long as there is an internet connection. In the event of a shipwreck accident, the black box can be automatically released, emerge from the water, and send a 406MHz distress message, so the accident investigation and analysis can be conducted through the video information stored in the black box. The working principle of the system is shown in the figure below.

    System operation authorization

    The system can set strict management authority. According to the different working permissions and the different authorizations of using the system, the system administrator will uniformly assign them, which can realize that one machine can view different ships with multiple users, and multiple machines and one user can view the same ship, thus achieving hierarchical management, and avoiding irrelevant personnel from viewing ship information.
